From Delhi to Chile, Zomato Expands

Users can also look for Trending this Week, Romantic, Pan-Asia Delicacies, Great Breakfasts, Live Music, Business Dining, etc.

Zomato is one of the most popular online restaurant discovery guides providing information on home delivery, dining-out, cafés, and nightlife in cities of India, Brazil, Turkey, Indonesia, New Zealand, Philippines, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Qatar, United Arab Emirates, and United Kingdom.

It was started as Foodiebay by Deepinder Goyal, a post-graduate of IIT Delhi. The idea sparked when helping his colleagues sorting out a large number of menu cards.

As announced by the company, it has expanded its operations in Chili. It was officially started in July 2008 with a list of 1,200 restaurants in Delhi. Gradually it expanded its operations in other cities and now with Chile expansion it has added another feather on its hat. In 2010, the website was named among the top 25 most promising internet companies in India by SmartTechie Magazine. In 2011, Zomato launched applications for iOS, Android, Windows Phone, and BlackBerry devices.

Zomato (then known as Foodiebay) raised its first round of funding of US $1 million (INR 4.7 crore) from Info Edge (India) Ltd. in August 2010. Zomato raised 3 more rounds of funding from the same investor. In November 2013, Zomato raised $37 million (INR 227.6 crore) from Sequoia Capital and Info Edge in its fifth round of funding.
